About Timetwister

Timetwister is a blue sorcery from Limited Edition Alpha and one of Magic's Power Nine. Collectors search for it because it combines early Magic history, Reserved List status, and a high-value playable-card identity that is frequently confused with later editions.

Why this card matters

Verified factTimetwister is one of the Power Nine and appears by name on Wizards of the Coast's Reserved List under Limited Edition. The official policy is useful evidence about future functionally identical tournament-legal reprints, but it is not a valuation model. Timetwister also has a different demand profile from many collectible-only cards because it is a famous game piece as well as a first-set collectible. CardVolume should therefore separate the Alpha object from later printings, commemorative treatments, and signed or altered versions. [1][2]

Identifying the exact version

AnalysisThe Alpha copy is the black-border first-set printing with no expansion symbol, Mark Tedin art, and Alpha-style rounded corners. The current catalog identity is LEA #84. Beta and Unlimited use the same name and classic art lineage but are separate editions; Collector's Edition and International Edition are not the same physical product; artist proofs are a different collectible category. Signed or sketched copies should not be merged with unsigned base copies unless the analysis is explicitly about autograph premiums. [1][5]

What moves the price between versions and grades

Verified factThe verified sales found here show why grade and service cannot be merged. A CGC NM/Mint 8 Alpha Timetwister at Heritage in 2025, a CGC EX/NM 6 Alpha example in a different Heritage auction, and a PSA 9 eBay auction recorded by PSA are all separate comp lanes. The spread is also affected by signed status, subgrades, image appeal, and whether the source is an auction house or marketplace. Use the exact card identity first, then compare only the same grader and grade where possible. [3][4][6]

Authenticity checks

Verified factCompare any candidate Timetwister against Alpha references for frame, text placement, card back, print texture, corner shape, and Mark Tedin credit. Use multiple checks together and do not perform destructive tests. Be especially cautious around Collector's Edition alteration claims because square-corner cards can be physically modified. For slabbed copies, match the cert information to the label and images, but do not treat a valid cert number alone as proof that the physical slab and card are genuine. [7]

Identity note: Seed identity corrected from unnumbered to collector number 84 using MTG catalog references. Original Alpha cards did not display modern collector numbers.
Why collectors look this card up: Remaining Power Nine Alpha card not already indexed; high vintage collector demand. source 1

What people get wrong about this card

"A Timetwister is a Timetwister, so any sale works."
Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Collector's Edition, 30th Anniversary Edition, artist proofs, signed copies, and altered copies are different comp lanes.
"Reserved List means no version can ever appear again."
Wizards' policy is specific to tournament-legal physical cards and functionally identical reserved cards; special treatments and non-tournament products require separate classification.
"Population proves surviving supply."
Population is a graded-count snapshot and does not count raw, crossed-over, cracked, unsubmitted, or other-grader copies.
