The ten-minute purchase screen

1. Identify the exact item; reject unresolved variant ambiguity.
2. Look at multiple recent comparable sales, not one screenshot.
3. Inspect photographs and obtain missing condition evidence.
4. Check plausible additional supply and available substitutes.
5. Estimate conservative net sale proceeds.
6. Compare those proceeds with acquisition cost and required margin.
7. Check seller credibility and transaction protections.
8. Write the reason to buy and the reason you might be wrong.
9. Confirm the purchase fits your predefined budget.
10. If the needed evidence takes longer, continue the research; the timer is a screening aid, not a deadline to buy.

You do not need to make a purchase to complete the research exercises. If no candidate meets your standards, a documented decision to pass is a valid result.

Weekly operating review

Review new cash outlays, cash recovered, sold margins, old inventory, open returns, pending grading, and your largest exposure. Update prices only where the expected decision benefit justifies the work. Save the dates and links supporting any material valuation change.

Questions that should remain unanswered until researched

• The exact current market price of a particular card you have not identified.
• A future print quantity the manufacturer has not disclosed.
• The probability your specific raw copy receives a particular grade.
• Whether a creator’s disclosed wins represent their complete returns.
• Whether a card can be sold quickly at the price shown in an app.
• Whether a quoted platform fee applies to your account, category, location, and order.

Write “unknown” in these fields. An honest gap is more useful than invented precision.
